Molding local climate leaders one student at a time

TownGreen’s Youth Climate Leadership Program, in partnership with The Climate Initiative, empowers young people to become climate leaders.

about the program

The annual program runs for four hour-long Zoom sessions in October. Students from Cape Ann middle and North Shore high schools learn climate science, communication strategies, and project management skills, while gaining the chance to connect with like-minded peers.

Youth Climate Leadership Program

Program Highlights

  • The sessions are taught by undergraduate and graduate students studying environmental science, climate communications, and other climate-related majors.
  • Each session features a presentation on a climate focus, like climate science, followed by group interactive activities and discussion so students get the chance to talk about climate issues with their peers.
  • Students identify a climate or environmental-related project to do in their schools or communities and then learn how to write
a proposal and develop a budget.
  • Each student receives a customized certificate of completion.

Eligibility

  • Middle and high school students who attend Cape Ann high schools: Rockport High School, Gloucester High School, and Manchester Essex Regional High School
  • Students from other North Shore high schools
  • Private school and homeschooled students in middle or high school

In the Youth Climate Leadership Program, I learned how to answer the question, “How do I get others to care?” We brainstormed ways to translate our motivations for fighting climate change into motivations to involve others who may not share our same values. I learned a valuable lesson: if you want to see widespread climate action, it can’t be done without appealing to the opinions of others.”
