Hands-on projects for Cape Ann Residents

participatory science projects

Participatory science projects allow TownGreen supporters to get out in the field and make a significant contribution by collecting data and monitoring the health of our ecosystems.

Our first participatory science projects will monitor the Good Harbor Marsh and the marsh near Wingaersheek Beach.

It’s all about the science

As a participatory scientist, you’ll be trained on safety, how to collect data, how to record quality data, and how to submit your reports. Your efforts will result in gathering data that can be used to assess the impacts of climate change on the marshes as well as in decision-making.

Our Participatory Science Projects

Good Harbor Marsh and Wingaersheek Beach/West Annisquam Marsh are the subjects of TownGreen’s first two participatory science projects. These projects will monitor the marshes over the long term to determine the effectiveness of restoration efforts and establish an ecological health baseline. TownGreen will provide training, materials, gear, and communication for field days.

The Project

Participatory scientists will establish a baseline of ecological health for the marshes and monitor changes after restoration efforts. They will:

  • Sample designated marsh sites
  • Observe and record plant species
  • Record ecological parameters, such as bare soil, dead plant matter, and invasive species
  • Document birds and other animal species

Why Marshes Are Important

Salt marshes provide critical habitat for numerous species, protect the coast from storms, and filter pollutants. However, they are threatened by rising sea levels and climate change.

Project Lead

The program is led by John Cigliano, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Biology and former Director of Environmental Conservation at Cedar Crest College. John is current adjunct research faculty member at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park and a resident of Rockport.
